Our Black Author of the Month for this Black History Month is Phillis Wheatley — a groundbreaking literary figure whose words reshaped American history. Enslaved as a child, Phillis Wheatley became one of the first African American women — and one of the first African Americans, period — to publish a book of poetry. Her 1773 collection, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, challenged the racist beliefs of her time by proving that Black intellect, creativity, and humanity could not be denied. Through her poetry, Wheatley explored faith, freedom, identity, and justice, leaving a powerful legacy that opened doors for generations of Black writers to come. As we honor Black History Month, we celebrate Phillis Wheatley not only for her words, but for the history she helped write with courage, brilliance, and resilience.
