Zora Neale Hurston wasn’t just telling stories—she was preserving a culture.

As a leading voice of the Harlem Renaissance, she used her writing and research to celebrate Black life in a way the world had rarely seen before—full of depth, pride, and authenticity. Her most famous novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, gave us a powerful look at Black womanhood, identity, and independence through the voice of Janie Crawford.

But her impact didn’t stop at fiction. As an anthropologist, Hurston traveled through the South and the Caribbean, documenting Black folklore, traditions, and everyday stories—making sure they weren’t erased or forgotten.

She gave a voice to the unheard, honored the richness of Black culture, and helped shape how Black stories are told today.
